At the start of Pandemic 2020, parents were caught by surprise when their children transitioned to virtual schooling at home. There were some early hiccups as school districts scrambled to integrate technology into their game plan for academic instruction. Lost in the shuffle were many of the 7.2 million public school students with learning disabilities which normally called for more direct, hands-on oversight by teachers and administrators. It is estimated that roughly 15 - 20% of the global population is neurodiverse. Yet, the world is primarily set up for those who are considered typical thinkers. Thankfully, K - 12 schools are bound to make reasonable accommodations for students with learning differences, but there's still more work to do to create safe, welcoming spaces in which these students can thrive. In the meantime, students and their parents need strategies for advocacy as well as navigating the academic environment to get their needs met. Thankfully, Dr. Kimberly Douglass is joining me today to shed some light on this topic.Learn more about Dr. Douglass at www.decolonizingneurodivergence.comGuest: Dr. Kimberly Douglass, Educator, Author & Advocate
