Each year, more than 250,000 children are placed into foster care. African American children make up about 20% of that population. More than 23,000 children will age out of the foster care system (age 18), every year and 25% of those will suffer from direct effects of PTSD. While about 7 out of every 10 foster kids indicates they would like to attend college one day, only about 6% of those who age out of the system will attend college and only 50% of that group will actually graduate with a degree. I asked him to recount his journey to redemption where his quest to escape the perils of poverty and his father's addiction led to drug dealing and violence on the mean streets of Baltimore. It’s true mother’s work is never done, but Carol Muleta did finish writing her book on the topic. She traded places with Charlotte Avery, 2020 Virginia Mother of the Year®️. Charlotte asked Carol questions about her recently released volume, Mother's Work: Pearls of Wisdom and Gems from my journey. Charlotte said she liked the conversational style of the book and felt like she heard Carol speaking as she read the book. To say motherhood has been an adventure is quite an understatement. It's been more like a wild ride, but I wouldn't trade a moment of it. Not only has it been my privilege to watch my baby boys grow, but my continued evolution as a woman AND a mom has also been an unexpected blessing. Along the way, I held fast to pearls of wisdom that comforted and guided me. Each mother has a unique path to tread in guiding each of her children to be who God intended them to be.
