The Parenting 411 Episode 80: Holding Calm with Kids (and everybody else)
Tuesday Mar 21, 2023
Tuesday Mar 21, 2023
Conflict is inevitable. We are unique individuals with different personalities, perspectives, and plans about what happens to us and around us. Resolution of our differences can be tense, uncomfortable, and downright maddening. We see conflict in the professional world with contentious legal cases, mediation proceedings, and workplace disputes. We also see conflict in our personal interactions. Unchecked, conflict can escalate and become volatile with dangerous outcomes. If adults are having a hard time managing conflict, imagine how hard it can be for kids. We can start early to give them tools for resolving conflict in a productive, non-combative way. I am joined today by master mediator and attorney, Hesha Abrams. She has helped parties around the world navigate their opposing interests to arrive at workable deals and agreements that serve their needs. I asked her to apply her wisdom to the power struggles many parents experience with their children. I enjoyed her stories and ready-to-use strategies for holding the calm with and I believe you will, too. Visit https://www.holdingthecalm.com to grab your copy Hesha's book, Holding the Calm: The Secret to Resolving Conflict and Defusing Tension. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Let's stay connected:Website: carolmuleta.comIG: @the_parenting_411TikTok: @theparenting411Facebook: The Parenting 411YouTube: The Parenting 411 on YouTube

The Parenting 411 Episode 79: Healthy Food for Healthy Families with Sara Ayres
Tuesday Mar 14, 2023
Tuesday Mar 14, 2023
Among the top concerns parents have today, keeping their children healthy ranks at the top of the list. Nutrition is a critical tool in meeting this need. With today's busy lifestyles, families often find themselves eating on the go or consuming easy-to-prepare, processed foods at home. Done to excess, these practices can lead to very unhealthy outcomes for kids like obesity, diabetes, poor brain development, low immunity, infections, and risks for high cholesterol and high blood pressure as adults. My guest today believes you can do better for your family. She is Sara Ayres, author, educator and advocate for healthy eating. She is co-owner of Bello Campo Farm where she tends a big garden, along with cows, sheep, and chickens. Sara shares how parents can start small growing healthy food for their families while educating their children early about making good food choices. You'll also want to hear about her children's book series which introduces them to farm life. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, an estimated 25 to 50 percent of children and 40 percent of adolescents experience sleep problems. The quality of sleep our children get affects attention, cognitive performance, mood, resiliency, vocabulary acquisition, learning and memory. Not only that, a recent study found that getting a solid seven hours of sleep at night could add up to 5 years to your life. Children need more than that -- young children should get as much as 11 - 14 hours of sleep while teens should strive for 8 - 10 hours. So we know sleep is important, but parents can attest that it is not always easy to get children to sleep. The truth is we actually have to be intentional and set the stage for restful sleeping, for children and ourselves. I am joined today by Pediatric Sleep Consultant, Hilliary Giglio. She is a master at teaching you how to get your child to fall asleep independently, sleeping through the night and taking restful daytime naps. The Parenting 411 Episode 77: Feeding Baby Well with Andrea Ippolito
Tuesday Feb 28, 2023
Tuesday Feb 28, 2023
The last few years have amplified the challenges faced by moms trying to feed their babies. There was the recall of a major baby formula brand in February 2021 that ignited panic among mothers of infants. Accommodation of the needs of nursing moms is anything but consistent amongst employers. Then there's the fact that breastfeeding, while 'natural', is not always easy. Whatever approach moms choose to feed their babies, they need support, so they can perform this loving and necessary act. Andrea Ippolito, Founder of SimpliFed, recognized this dilemma and is doing something about it as her company fulfills its mission "to create a new model for optimal feeding by building trusted relationships with parents, partnering with healthcare payers and providers, and shifting policy, practice, and narratives to drive health and economic equity, starting with baby’s first foods." Motherhood is as much a journey of discovery about self as it is about the children you're nurturing and guiding. For those who are immersed in the experience with very young children, it sure can be nice to hear a little wisdom from someone who's been there. Kim Sorrelle does that for us today. Expectant parents experience a wide range of emotions over the months leading up to their child's birth -- joy, excitement, anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. They plan, prepare their home, and envision what their child will be like. As thrilled as they are when their little one arrives, reality sets in that caring for their newborn is WAY more work than they imagined. Those early months are called the fourth trimester and today's guest has a passion for guiding parents through it. Here to talk to me about navigating that time is Dr. Diane Speier. For a full discussion about how parents can cope in the post-partum period, check out Dr. Speier's book, Life After Birth: A Parent’s Holistic Guide for Thriving in the Fourth Trimester. To say motherhood has been an adventure is quite an understatement. It's been more like a wild ride, but I wouldn't trade a moment of it. Not only has it been my privilege to watch my baby boys grow, but my continued evolution as a woman AND a mom has also been an unexpected blessing. Along the way, I held fast to pearls of wisdom that comforted and guided me. Each mother has a unique path to tread in guiding each of her children to be who God intended them to be. I am thrilled to share my journey with you.
